Aerobatics Day 2026 Report

Today, 12 members turned out for the Annual Aerobatics Day. The day started slightly cool and damp but gradually became warmer and brighter as the weather improved.
Three pilots took part in the first round of flying in front of two judges. Each pilot flew ten manoeuvres, with points awarded for each manoeuvre completed.

Take off into wind and climb out.
1 Straight and level flight (min.100m).
2 Straight and level flight inverted.
3 Two consecutive inside loops.
4 Two consecutive Barrel rolls.
5 Reversal. Half loop until inverted then half roll out.
6 Stall turn.
7 Three spins.
8 Any 'free style' manoeuvre.
9 Touch and Go'.... Roll not bounce!
10 Rectangular approach and landing
Overall presentation.

Members then broke for lunch and were treated to a fantastic spread provided by Angie Richards, including cakes, sausage rolls, cookies, and sausage and bacon rolls.
After lunch, the second round was flown. The scores from both judges and both rounds were then combined to give each pilot an overall flying score.

Power Gliding Day - Roger Price Memorial Cup.

19 members, along with family and friends, turned out for another fantastic Power Gliding Day in honour of the Roger Price Memorial Cup. The weather played ball beautifully this year — blazing sunshine, flat calm conditions, and plenty of thermals throughout the day.

A total of 16 pilots entered the competition, flying across three rounds before progressing to the fly‑off stage.

✈️ Round 1

Pilots began with a 20‑second power climb, aiming to stay aloft for a maximum of 5 minutes, with 10 seconds bonus awarded for landing in the designated box area.

Lift was superb, and 8 pilots maxed out at 5 minutes, with 6 of those achieving the full 5m 10s thanks to accurate landings in the box.

Members then broke for lunch, enjoying a great spread of cakes, sausage rolls, pork & stuffing batches, and sausage batches.

✈️ Round 2

For Round 2, the power climb‑out was reduced to 15 seconds. Even with the shorter climb, 5 pilots still managed to max out at 5 minutes, showing just how buoyant the air remained.

Lift continued to be exceptional, with some incredible heights achieved. However, Bruce and Andy unfortunately dropped out early after losing lift and were unable to stay aloft long enough to progress.

🏆 Fly‑Off – Reduced Power Climb

With three pilots remaining, the decision was made to run a final fly‑off with the power climb reduced again — this time to 7 seconds. The format was simple: Last pilot flying would take the trophy.

Despite the short climb, lift was still plentiful, and pilots were again gaining height with ease. Eventually, fatigue began to show, and the final landings were recorded as follows:

Annual Club Fun Day — 18 July 2026

A fantastic turnout of 15 members plus family and friends made this year's Fun Day another relaxed, friendly success. As always, the emphasis was on sociability, good humour, and enjoyable flying rather than formal competition. A light breeze persisted throughout the day, but conditions remained pleasant and flyable from start to finish.

Slow Flight — New for 2026

This brand‑new event proved to be a real crowd‑pleaser, mixing precision flying with a bit of suspense. 

Objective — Fly from Point A to Point B as slowly as possible without stalling or touching down. Pilots first completed one full circuit of the field. As they crossed Point A, the timer started hey then flew towards Point B at the slowest safe speed they could manage. The timer stopped at the finish gate — slowest time wins.

The gentle breeze added an extra layer of challenge, making throttle control and angle of attack absolutely key. Several pilots demonstrated impressively controlled slow‑flight technique.

This was won by John Copper with 23 secs 

Limbo Competition — New Twist for 2026

This year's Limbo event ran with a fresh set of rules: each pilots had two minutes to achieve as many passes under the pole as possible. Depth perception and the cross‑field breeze made the task trickier than expected, but the determination (and occasional laughter) kept the atmosphere lively. Some pilots racked up multiple clean passes, while others discovered just how deceptive the pole height can be when the wind nudges you off line.

John Copper once again cleaned up on this event with 10 passes. 

BBQ & Refreshments

A huge thank‑you goes to Angie Richards, who once again kept everyone fuelled with sausage rolls, cake, and drinks throughout the day. Her contribution remains a cornerstone of the Fun Day's welcoming, family‑friendly feel.

A Great Day All Round Plenty of flying, plenty of laughs, and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly captures what the Fun Day is all about.

Bungee gilding day event

18 members turned out for our Bungee Gliding Event, arriving to a bright, clear morning that gradually shifted to overcast skies with the occasional hint of rain. Despite the changing conditions, enthusiasm remained high and the flying stayed consistently workable throughout the day.

A total of 11 pilots took part, each completing two qualifying rounds.
Scoring was based on:
- Maximum flight time: 6 minutes
- Landing bonus: 10 seconds for touching down inside the designated box area.
After both rounds, the top five pilots advanced to the Final Fly‑Off, where all scores were reset and the best single flight would decide the winner of the Dave Perrett Cup.

George's 12‑minute flight was the standout performance of the qualifying rounds, making excellent use of lift that others found difficult to latch onto.

Final Fly‑Off Results
With everyone's scores levelled the pressure was on. Lift had flattened by this stage, making every second of air time hard‑earned.

A superb, consistent performance from Ian, who claimed the Dave Perrett Cup with a confident and well‑managed final flight.
Summary
A fantastic day's flying, great camaraderie, and a strong turnout despite the weather's mood swings. Thank you to everyone who helped retrieve the bungee line, assisted with timing and scoring, and kept the event running smoothly.

Scale & Vintage Day Saturday 25th April 2026

Thirty members, along with family and friends, enjoyed what turned out to be an absolutely glorious day at the field. With more than 65 models present—covering everything from classic scale favourites to beautifully kept vintage airframes—the flightline and pits were buzzing from the moment the gates opened.
Two competitions took place: the Static Event and the Flying Event. 

Static Winner: Ian Hammerton with his superb Russian‑built Lavochkin LA‑7, a model that drew a crowd all morning thanks to its finish and attention to detail.
Flying Winner: Chris Berry with his impressive F4U Corsair, powered by a Saito 84cc three‑cylinder petrol radial that sounded every bit as good as it looked in the air.

Members were also treated to a fine spread of sandwiches, cakes, sausage rolls, tea and coffee. A huge thank‑you goes to Angie Richards for providing the day's culinary delights and keeping everyone well fed.
A fantastic day all round, with great flying, great company, and great weather.

Winter Build Competition

This year's Winter Build competition was held Monday 13th April after the OGM. 
There were 2 Entrees this year, as always the models were of a high standard, All the models this year were judged by the members themselves.  

Aircraft are judged on 4 categories

  • I)  Build Complexity,
  • ii) Construction Quality
  • iii) Finish.

(Marks were awarded out of 10pts - scores were all totalled together to give a final scale for each entrée .


Winners this year were: 

  • 1st Place - Trevor White - Hawker Fury MK1 - K5674 (G-CBZP)
  • 2nd: Tony Boucher - F7F Grumman Tigercat
